Dr. Ganapathi Rao happens to be my father-in-law and having heard some of these stories directly from him during our long drives between Thrissur and Ernakulam, I was eagerly awaiting the publication of this book. "Nishkama Karma" or performing one's duty without any thought for appreciation or positive results is an important lesson that I have learnt from him. Compassionate and highly empathetic, Dr. Rao, has touched the lives of thousands of students, colleagues, patients and acquaintances. Reading this book gave me glimpse into his amazing career and life.

“Faith and Fate” is the most appropriate title given to this book, revealing the faith and the fate of both the patient and the doctor. Despite his honest, sincere and loving care, the fate of the author Dr. Ganapathy Rao (Chapter 54) – blaming him for the death of the patient, taking him to consumer court for professional negligence etc. have not affected his “faith” in the patients who come to him seeking solace. “Expect the Unexpected” is the slogan which every doctor should remember. This book is a wealth of knowledge (gained by the author within a span of 5-6 decades) not only in medicine but also in the evolution of human beings, to the readers in all domains, especially to those in medical field. I would faithfully recommend this book as a must to read by the young doctors, to make them realize that medicine is learned from patients and the patient is always correct (Chapter 6), also “clinical medicine” is never going to die.
